Why does my child sometimes throw and break things when I ask him to do something new?

Find answers

Children with fragile X syndrome can become very frustrated when they are asked to change what they are doing, especially without warning. There are many ways to work on this problem and to improve behavior. Professionals who specialize in the ABC's of behavior (Antecedent - Behavior - Consequence) can be of great assistance and can help parents understand what is the cause of behavior problems. For example, all behaviors have "antecedents" or what comes before the behavior, and all behavior have "consequences" or what follows the behavior. Understanding antecedents and consequences is important to understanding behavior, including behavior problems.

There are many, many easy to understand descriptions about the ABC's of behavior on the internet, but here is a particularly easy one to follow: http://www.slideshare.net/terrasi15/abcs-of-behavior-ppt

Toileting

Will my 9 year old with fragile X syndrome ever learn to use the bathroom on his own?

Find answers

Many children who are delayed in their development also are delayed in the development of toileting skills. However, most children will eventually learn to use the bathroom on their own. Parents should always first check with their child's doctor to make sure that there are no medical problems that are interfering with using the bathroom. Becoming independent in toileting involves many different skills including being able to identify the physical sensation of needing to use the bathroom, communicating that need (for younger children) and completing the many steps (behaviors) that are necessary once they are in the bathroom. Behavioral, Occupational and Speech Therapists can all contribute to this learning process, as long as they all work together as a team with the parents. In addition, most parent support groups have information on toileting related to their specific condition. The National Fragile X Foundation, for example, has some very helpful information at https://fragilex.org/treatment-intervention/daily-living-strategies/toilet-training/toilet-training-the-child-with-fragile-x-syndrome/
